Photo Club Holiday Social

2023 is looking good for the Photo Club. 

We have a great, energized new board. In addition to myself as president, Don LeHeup continues as VP, which practically guarantees that next year’s Photo Show will be a winner. Maria Riach will serve as Secretary, so members will be kept well informed. And Dennis Filangeri continues as webmaster & Treasurer, so your dues are safe. Cindy Lawrence has agreed to serve as a non-voting director-at-large. 

Our board planning meeting gets us off to a good start. We’ll share our plans with you at the Holiday Social on December 8th. No RSVP required – just bring an appetizer or dessert, enough to serve maybe 5-6 people (that should be enough to feed 30 attendees). Spouses welcome.

In case you can’t make the party, the January Program will be Humor in Photography, and the January meeting the photo theme is “Your Best Photos from 2022.” So post your top two on our Best of 2022 Album. 

We also are planning some interesting photo opportunity trips. You’ll be getting an on-line survey regarding your interest in various trips. Please make sure you complete it. Our club depends on the enthusiastic contribution of its members, in meetings, in theme photos, in trips, in the Photo Show.

PHOTO CLUB MEETING PLANNING

I look forward to a brainstorming meeting at Tavern at the Falls to come up with activities and meeting topics. I think an informal gathering over tea and crumpets or whatever could be productive. With advance notice our members will have time to mull ideas over and come to the gathering armed with thoughts. Because many are being cautious about gatherings because of Covid. When it looks like things have settled down a date for the meeting will be selected. In the meantime, put on your thinking caps.

Here are some of my thoughts,

Do we need to have a “How To—“ presentation at every meeting? What about a “Show and Tell” Where one could give a presentation on a photographic experience they have had. I’m thinking of such things as Helen and Diane’s foray into Northern Nevada or J. and Dennis’ trip to the Ely Winterfest. Not to put them on the spot, but that type of thing.

Could we have a meeting of “Picture with a story”? The picture needn’t tell the story but what was your quest to get that particular picture. You needn’t have taken the picture, but it could be one from the family archives of how you fled across the Arctic Tundra ahead of a herd of bloodthirsty mosquitos or Uncle Smedley’s one day of sobriety. Something from the family lore, wedding, bar mitzvah, you name it. Is there a story behind the picture?

We have surveys of topics of possible interest. We should follow up on items that received several votes, but I think consideration should be given to things that might have received only one or two votes. A presentation on such could open one’s eyes to something else to try. One thing that will be addressed is Larry’s upcoming presentation on 3D photography. We stand to learn a bit about it and how we might give it a try. Another topic might be videos. Our cameras and Smart phones have video capabilities, but how do we go about using it? I’m sure one doesn’t just go out and start shooting. A talk on making a short 2-minute video might give one the courage for making a video without feeling it has to be a huge movie production. KISS usually works.

Our guest speaker for February 2020 was Matt Rich, from St. George UT. Matt is a very experienced photographer, with an avid interest in landscape photography, especially the Southwest and the Grand Canyon.  

Matt shared his love of photography with his presentation “Ten Basic Skills to Photograph the Southwest”.  In addition to offering these useful tips, Matt included a section specifically for cellphone users with helpful tips and app suggestions to capture different kinds of images with a cellphone.  His presentation was not only informative, but inspirational as we plan our next photography outings!

January Photo Walk:  Photo Scavenger Hunt

January 11, 2020

Thirteen brave adventurers ventured out on a sunny day to capture images for ten different categories.  Each category could be found within Sun City, but some people traveled outside Sun City to capture their creative images!  The photo sleuths participating were Luise Brown, Helen Delahunt, Dennis Filangeri, J Filangeri, Marina Jurasek, Dale Kavula, Cindy Lawrence, Don LeHeup, Joyce O’Keefe, Maria Raich, Dee Stephenson, Sue Stevens, and Norm Wright.  The challenge was to find images for the following ten categories:  People, Food, Landscape, Red, Looking Down, Palm Tree, Leading Lines, Vehicle Part, Pattern, and Miniature Golf Course View.  Prizes will be awarded for the Best Image in Each Category, and the Best Image of the Day as determined by two expert judges from the Las Vegas photographic community.

January 11, 2020 Scavenger Hunt

MEMBERS ONLY

WHEN:  Saturday, January 11, 2020 (7am start)

WHERE:  You decide!

DETAILS:

No later than 7am, Saturday, January 11, 2020, if you have indicated you are going to participate and have provided your email address to Diane Frankenfield

(e: dfranken2@gmail.com),  you will receive an email message with the list of images you will need to capture by 4pm that same day. You may use a DSLR camera or point and shoot camera…the only requirement is that your camera has a memory card with your images that you can remove from your camera and turn in for transfer onto Diane’s computer.  The idea for this activity is to HAVE FUN, TAP INTO YOUR CREATIVITY, and use your camera’s features and capabilities to create your images.  No post-processing is allowed….simply try for the best image you can get straight out of your camera.   Sorry, for this activity, we aren’t allowing cell phone images.

Once you receive your listing of images to capture in the hunt, it’s up to you to decide where you want to go to capture these images.  You might be able to do everything around your home, within Sun City itself, or you may choose to venture outside Sun City for more options.  You may work solo, or if you want to get with a group of other members and travel around together, you are free to do that too!

An example of a Category could be TORTOISE.  You could take a photo of a stuffed tortoise, a real tortoise, a tortoise sculpture, a metal tortoise, a plastic tortoise – be creative and use your imagination!

Diane will be in the Photo Club studio at Desert Vista from 4pm -5pm to transfer your images from your memory card to her computer.   Please have only one image per category on your memory card to speed up the process.  If you have more than one image per category, just delete the images on your card that you don’t like and keep what you consider to be the best one for each category on the card that you bring at 4pm.  If you aren’t able to capture an image for every category, no worries…just get what you can and HAVE FUN with the activity!

You will get your memory card back after your images are transferred to Diane’s computer.

There are two judges from the Nevada Camera Club who will be judging the entries.  They will be selecting the best image for each category as well as an overall Best Image of the Day. We’ll show the entries for each category, along with the images for the Category winners, and the overall Best Image of the Day, at the February monthly meeting on February 13, 2020.  There will be prizes for all the winners!

Photography Club Monthly Meeting for MAY 2019

HAVING FUN WITH YOUR CAMERA!

Come join us for a fun evening experimenting with our cameras.  All types of cameras may be used for this program – from cell phones, point and shoot, advanced DSLRs!  We are planning on having the following “stations” in our meeting room, where you can try getting different, creative images!  You can bring your tripod if you have one, but you will be able to participate without a tripod.

We are planning on having the following stations in the room set up with the materials you would need to create your image(s):

Not sure what some of these stations will be?  No worries!  You will have guide sheets at each station explaining a “place to start”, as well as photos of images you can get at the stations, and someone available at the stations to help!  The main idea is to HAVE FUNand try using your camera in ways you may not have tried before!

OUR 2018 PHOTO SHOW A SUCCESS!

WE DID IT! 

Thanks to dedicated Photo Club volunteers, we put on one of our best-ever Photo Shows on November 17.

After Joel Lugavere talked with his friends in the Art Club, who agreed to loan us a large number of their easels, Judith Filangeri snagged all five meeting rooms at Desert Vista, which considerably enlarged the space for our show. This ultimately allowed the approximately 200 prints to be displayed in a gracious manner. No longer were they cramped next to — almost on top of — one another, or found sitting on the floor. This year the over 200 visitors had plenty of elbow room to walk around while viewing our photographic efforts. Chairs strategically placed throughout the room allowed for both conversations and a respite from standing. 

We began our preparations for the show sooner this year. On April 29, twelve Photo Club members met to form the Photo Show Committee which decided on tasks, divided up activities and organized sub-committees with specific responsibilities. Over the following months these groups worked on financing, the layout and display at the show, the photo contest, public relations and day-of-show scheduling. 

Kathy Kirby and her photo display sub-committee worked hard to raise the professional appearance of our show by standardizing mats, photo title tags and holders for the prints. Dennis Filangeri located new, functional hangers for all the mats, as well as handsome slip-on title tag holders. Meanwhile, Don LeHeup checked and repaired our older photo stands. 

As a result, we avoided some of the previous years’ last-minute scrambles and less-than-desirable display situations. 

Joel created an eye-catching poster to advertise the Photo Show as well as a handsome new flyer to promote our club’s activities. 

Meanwhile, with her usual project-manager efficiency, Judith held it all together by keeping everyone on track to produce results on schedule, while interfacing with CCOC (SCSAI clubs) management.  

When the show opened at 10 am on Saturday, Nov 17, we were ready. 

Diane Frankenfield - Lunar Eclipse

Many visitors commented on how difficult it was to choose “Just one ‘Best in Show’ photo.” When all the votes had been counted, Diane Frankenfield’s stunning “Lunar Eclipse - Calico Basin” was the clear winner. Across a dark sky arced the moon’s varying colors, in a series of time-paced shots which demonstrated both Diane’s photographic skill and her patience.

Two runners-up for “Best in Show” were not out-of-this-world, but both took viewers on a journey outside Vegas. Don Lytton’s “Sidewalk Reflections, Venice, Italy” and Dean Otteson’s “Delicate Arch, Utah” were vibrant and evocative.

One of our newer members, Cliff Rourke, provided a unique contribution. Cliff is a professional portrait photographer; he offered to bring his portable studio to the Photo Show. For a $15 donation to the club, Cliff provided portraits of interested attendees. This resulted in a nice boost to our treasury. We're delighted that Cliff has agreed to return next year.

When it was discovered there would be sufficient space for a TV screen with a rolling slide show, at the last minute Norm Wright put together a presentation watched by many visitors.

By himself, all day long, Adrian Cole adroitly handled sales of photos and photo-cards, netting the club extra revenue for our activities.

On the day of the big event, 22 club members — almost half our total current membership — volunteered to help do everything from set-up to tear-down to answering questions from visitors. 

Special Kudos to the most dedicated of our Photo Club members who spent all day (from shortly after 8:00 am to 4 pm) at the Photo Show:

Approximately half our members submitted photos for the show this year. 

If you did not, please give serious thought to doing so in 2019. Although the limit per photographer was 10 prints, it’s OK to submit only a few, if you wish — even one is fine. Other members would like to see your work, and you will learn from the process of participation. 

If you did not volunteer for the Photo Show in 2018, think about what you might do in 2019. There are many fun ways to put your talents to good use while you enjoy working with your fellow Photo Club members on a worthwhile project. You can help with advance preparations for the show, even if you will be out of town on the day of the event.

The 2019 Photo Show is scheduled to take place on Saturday, November 16th.

We have already reserved all five meeting rooms at Desert Vista, and are looking forward to another fun Photo Show.

Sun City Photography Club Minutes, General Meeting, August 9, 2018, Desert Vista

Norm opened the meeting opened at 7 pm and led the pledge. We welcomed two new members, Clifford Rourke and Carlos Pebenito.

Member Presentation: Dale gave a presentation of photos from her trip to the Rhinebeck, NY, Aerodrome.

Photo Show Planning: The Photo Show Committee has been working hard at improving the photo show experience for everyone this year. Dennis gave a summary of the details so that members can start preparing their photos. The full "Photo Show Insider's" presentation is available on-line.
Key take-aways:

• Photos can be 8x10 (11x14 matted) or 10x14 (16x20 matted). 
• Photos have to be matted and include a backboard. Photographer name and contact information needs to be on the backboard of each photo. 
• Members may submit up to 10 photos. 
• Since visitors will be voting on Best In Show, the front of the matted photo needs to be anonymous. The club will be making up all photo labels, so all submissions will need photographer name, a title for the photo, a price if it is for sale or state "not-for-sale". 
• Photos must be submitted by October 11th (club meeting date). That way we know how many we have, we can prepare labels, and we can assign numbers for the contest. 

Techniques and Tips
Norm gave a presentation of his recent family trip, with suggestions on how to get good candid shots of grandkids.

Theme Competition
This month's theme was Cityscapes. Members were asked to limit submissions to no more than two photos to make the competition more meaningful.

The winner was Dean O. His photo entitled Moon Over Seattle was taken at Queen Ann Hill in Seattle in 2015 using a Nikon 3000 and some creative post processed using Photoshop.

Next month's Theme is Holidays. That means ANY holiday, e.g. 4th of July, Thanksgiving, Memorial Day, Chanukah, Christmas, Helldorado, Halloween, Bastille Day...whatever.

China Lights Field Trip, February 7, 2018

We visited the exhibit China Lights in Craig Ranch Regional Park for our February field trip on February 7, 2018. Carole and Bill Paul, Dennis and J Filangeri, Dale Kavula and Diane Frankenfield enjoyed a very colorful display of Chinese lanterns and lights.

Highlights included a large illuminated dragon surrounded by jellyfish and flowers, with beautiful reflections in the adjacent lake.

Pathways led us through fanciful displays of illuminated jungle animals, sea creatures, panda bears, and more!



There were performers on a stage demonstrating traditional Chinese dances, juggling, and graceful body contortion.

They had craftsmen there, demonstrating different traditional Chinese handicrafts.

If you weren’t able to attend, this festival will be at Craig Ranch until February 25….you won’t want to miss this opportunity to photograph these beautiful and colorful displays! Click here to visit our online album.

Our next field trip will be March 22, 2018, with a visit to Valley of Fire State Park to take sunrise photos at Fire Wave, with an optional walk on the White Domes trail.  Hopefully the wildflowers will be on display at that time…hope to see you there!

Club Communications

How do you communicate with others? Telephone? Snail-Mail? Semaphore? Or do you prefer a more modern mode of communications such as email and the internet?

Clubs need to be able to communicate with their members in an expeditious and timely manner in order to alert them of important club business.  The Photography Club uses its website and email for this purpose. We understand that some folks prefer telephone and mail, but these modes are slow and inefficient in getting important information to all its members.

The website (www.photography-scslv.club) is updated regularly with new and revised information. Members are encouraged to visit the site at least once a week or more to see if there are updates to planned trips and events. Click here for a brief tutorial on using the website.

Email reminders are sent to members and guests before scheduled meetings and other events. We respect your privacy and do not share your contact information with anyone. We also abide with email etiquette and will not send email messages to anyone who does not opt-in to our email.

The Club Forum is a group email using Google Groups which allows members to post their own messages and respond to messages of others in the group. All members should opt-in and participate. You can use your favorite email address to join the group; you do not need an @gmail.com address, but for security you do need to register with Google.

The club forum is flexible so you can control how frequently you receive email reminders about new messages, from all messages, to summary messages, to no messages at all (you need to go online to retrieve them). You can opt-out anytime. If you leave the club, you will be removed from the list. It's secure and available only to members who opt-in.

If you are planning an event or have information to share with club members, use the club forum. If there is a change in your plans, use the club forum as the best way to reach members.

You can use the forum from your ordinary email system by sending or forwarding your message to: photography-scslv@googlegroups.com. Everyone in the group will get your message.

If you want to reply only to the sender of a group message, you can do that in the group page by  using REPLY. To reply to the whole group, use REPLY ALL.

Health & Safety:

Some field trips may be strenuous due to distance and grade of walking. Due to the lack of cellular service in some remote areas, summoning help in an emergency might take a long time. If you have health or physical limitations, you need to consider this.

Sun City Summerlin Photography Club Show and Photo Contest

November 11^th, 10 AM-3 PM at Desert Vista

We have some amazing photographers here in Sun City... are you one?

The Photography Club is holding a patriotic themed photo contest open to all Sun City residents at our annual Photo Show on November 11^th.  First prize will be a $100 gift card. There will also be prizes for second and third place. SC residents can enter up to two photos with patriotic themes (such as July 4^th celebrations, fireworks, veteran events, etc.).

Photos need to be 8" x 10", mounted on 11" x 14" black or white mat board (Photo Club has mats available if needed).  All entries must have the following: a label with the photo title, and photo location and date taken on the front of the mat (or on the clear photo cover); the photographer's name/email/phone/SCS # on the back.

All submissions will be shown on our website and the winning photos will likely be published in local media.

Photos can be dropped off at the Photo Lab (Room D, Desert Vista) on 11/7 or 11/8 (call for times) or brought to a club meeting on Oct.12th or Nov. 9th (DV Room 5 at 7pm). Submission deadline is 11/9.

Photos can be picked up Tuesday, 11/14, at the Photo Lab from 9-11 AM or under arrangement.

Residents' Forum by Dale Kavula

The Sun City Summerlin Photography Club had a  table on Wednesday March 8th representing our club.  Jim Bird, Dale Kavula, Dennis and J Filangeri manned the booth.  The attendance was excellent and we signed up two new members plus many people  taking info about joining.  These events are good for all the clubs to showcase what we do.  Our club had photos from our monthly theme of critters so in small print at the top was Photography club and in very large letters CRITTERS.  This attracted more people to our booth trying to find out about the Critter Club.  Thank You Jim, Dale, Dennis and J.  

Photogrpahy Club on Display at Mountain Shadows

George led a team of members to set up the March club display at Mountian Shadows. The display features photos of club members
 that shows the diversity of subjects and techniques.

Please visit the display and encourage neighbors to view the gallery and if they have an interest in photography, to join the club.

 

2017 Club Profile

Over the last few weeks you were asked to answer some survey questions so that the new Board could better plan for a fun and productive year. The results were interesting, and not really surprising. The Board will be forming a couple of committees to make this the best year yet for the Photography Club of Sun City Summerlin.

Chinese New Year 2017 - Field Trip Anyone?

Thank you Dale Kavula for researching this. Chinese New Year of the Rooster starts on January 28. There will be many celebrations throughout Las Vegas providing excellent opportunities for shutterbugs to get some award winning photos.
