Everything You Need to Know for the Photo Show (Almost)

All members are encouraged to submit photos. Here are the details.

For Regular Matted Photos

• Photo sizes:
• 8x10 matted 11 x 14
• 11 x 14 matted 16 x 20
• Photos must be matted only; no frames
• Please submit photos that have not previously been displayed in our Photo Show
• Any matte color will be acceptable
• No more than 10 photos per person
• Photographer’s name must appear on the back of the photo.

For Specialty Photos

• Anything else you might do with photos, e.g. panorama, photos on canvas or metal, photo albums, mugs, etc.

Matted Photos-Labels and Deadlines

• Labels: Each matted photo must have a title. Please submit a title for each photo (not your name, which is on the back of the photo). Send a list of the titles to Maria Riach via email: mariamriach@gmail.com. She will make labels.
• Deadline for Title List: September 16th
• Deadline for Photos: October 12th Photo Club Meeting
• No photos will be accepted the day of the show. And NO handwritten labels will be accepted (so tacky), so get the list and photos in on time.

Specialty Photos-Labels and Deadlines

• Specialty photos can be submitted the morning of the show.
• Labels for Specialty Photos: We’re still working this out. More info by September.

Videos/Slide Shows

• Members willing to create a video or slide show will need to bring their own equipment for their display. Again, only material not already seen at our Photo Shows. Electrical outlets will be available.
• If you think you might create such a presentation, let us know anytime between now and September via email (snapscslv1@gmail.com)

Volunteers for Day of Show

As always, we'll need help setting up, tearing down, and running the show.  We'll send out a call for volunteers probably in September.

Composition Challenge

 Composition

In viewing photos on FaceBook in groups such as Nevada Photographers I am sometimes surprised by photos, even those posted by well-known photographers, that could have been improved by better composition. Often when I go out, I take several shots of the same scene, making adjustments in camera to adjust: positioning, focus, motion blur, color balance, and orientation to see which finished photo has the best overall composition (very subjective of course). This led me to this ‘challenge.’ 

Since some members might be considering offering your work to SCS for posting around the reservation, perhaps as a club activity you might want to share some of your composition trials for discussion.

Post two or more variations of ‘the same scene,’ that have different composition elements. You can use different versions taken in camera or two or more versions that you recomposed using editing software.

Scavenger Hunt - And The Winners Are...

Sun City Summerlin Photo Club Photo Scavenger Hunt

On Saturday, January 11, 2020, thirteen Photo Club members accepted the challenge to capture images in the Sun City community for ten different categories. They had the entire day to find these images using their favorite camera. They were not allowed to change or improve any image with post-processing techniques – all images were taken straight out of the camera!

Members participating were Luise Brown, Helen Delahunt, Dennis Filangeri, J Filangeri, Marina Jurasek, Dale Kavula, Cindy Lawrence, Don LeHeup, Joyce O’Keefe, Maria Riach, Dee Stephenson, Sue Stevens, and Norm Wright.

Then ten categories for “the hunt” were: Food, Landscape, Leading Lines, Looking Down, Mini Golf Course View, Palm Tree, Pattern, People, Red, and Vehicle Part. In addition to prizes awarded for Best Image in Each Category, there was one Grand Prize for Best Image of the Day.

January 11, 2020 Scavenger Hunt

MEMBERS ONLY

WHEN:  Saturday, January 11, 2020 (7am start)

WHERE:  You decide!

DETAILS:

No later than 7am, Saturday, January 11, 2020, if you have indicated you are going to participate and have provided your email address to Diane Frankenfield

(e: dfranken2@gmail.com),  you will receive an email message with the list of images you will need to capture by 4pm that same day. You may use a DSLR camera or point and shoot camera…the only requirement is that your camera has a memory card with your images that you can remove from your camera and turn in for transfer onto Diane’s computer.  The idea for this activity is to HAVE FUN, TAP INTO YOUR CREATIVITY, and use your camera’s features and capabilities to create your images.  No post-processing is allowed….simply try for the best image you can get straight out of your camera.   Sorry, for this activity, we aren’t allowing cell phone images.

Once you receive your listing of images to capture in the hunt, it’s up to you to decide where you want to go to capture these images.  You might be able to do everything around your home, within Sun City itself, or you may choose to venture outside Sun City for more options.  You may work solo, or if you want to get with a group of other members and travel around together, you are free to do that too!

An example of a Category could be TORTOISE.  You could take a photo of a stuffed tortoise, a real tortoise, a tortoise sculpture, a metal tortoise, a plastic tortoise – be creative and use your imagination!

Diane will be in the Photo Club studio at Desert Vista from 4pm -5pm to transfer your images from your memory card to her computer.   Please have only one image per category on your memory card to speed up the process.  If you have more than one image per category, just delete the images on your card that you don’t like and keep what you consider to be the best one for each category on the card that you bring at 4pm.  If you aren’t able to capture an image for every category, no worries…just get what you can and HAVE FUN with the activity!

You will get your memory card back after your images are transferred to Diane’s computer.

There are two judges from the Nevada Camera Club who will be judging the entries.  They will be selecting the best image for each category as well as an overall Best Image of the Day. We’ll show the entries for each category, along with the images for the Category winners, and the overall Best Image of the Day, at the February monthly meeting on February 13, 2020.  There will be prizes for all the winners!

Just go to the bottom of the website to the Tutorials section.

In the upper right of the image, you will see a tools icon that will open up the menu of available videos.

You will find Club Tutorials on how to use our website, how to  mount photos, to tips and techniques on myriad topics discussed by our club members. Just scroll down the list to find a topic of interest to you.

If you want your favorite photo video added to the tutorials send me a link so we can consider adding it to our menu of selected videos.

Sun City Photography Club Minutes, General Meeting, March 14, 2019, Desert Vista

Norm opened the meeting opened at 7 pm and led the pledge. We welcomed 4 new members, Louis Lindstrom, Marc Wiseman, Russell Meppen, and guests Alice Stein and Helene Orenstein.

Treasurer's Report: Dennis reported a Financial Balance of $379.
Refreshments Committee: Bob Sebastian brought refreshments for tonight's meeting. Diane F offered to provide refreshments in April.

Meeting Agenda & Discussion:

Equipment Purchases: Peter Guevara purchased one of our donated film cameras and is lovingly restoring it. He hopes eventually to share the photos he's able to take with it.

Theme Competition

This month's theme was Still Life. The top 3 vote getters were the dove (Laszlo H), cabbages (Joyce O) and a vintage camera (Helen D). After discussion about what made each a good photo, we voted again. The winner was Helen Delahunt's vintage camera. Members were reminded that photos are displayed in the Photo Lab for the next month.

Next month's theme is People/Portraits.

Interest Groups

• Basic Group: Members: J, Beth B, Gene, Carol P, Don LeHeup, Joyce O.. Basic Group member presented a sample of their experiments with shutter speed, aperture and ISO settings, all of which were posted to the on-line Google Photo album, which all members can see. The group also shared a "cheat sheet" outlining graphically the relationship between those three; copies were provided to all members (and a copy is in the Google Photo album for those who missed the meeting). Following the group's presentation, there was an animated discussion on where ISO came from as well as some helpful suggestions on the inter-relationship of the three basic elements and how best to use that relationship.
• Portraits: Helen D, Dale K, Diane F, Marina J, Don Lytton, Dean O, Sue S. Portrait Group explained how their group had organized, then presented examples of the different techniques used for portrait lighting and subject positioning. The presentation was highly informative and will be on the website for those who missed it or wish to see it again.
• Video: Members: Paul L. Norm W, Kim B, Cliff O. Norm ran a video he took of the Portraits group.

The presentations have been informative and well-received. Those groups that still haven't presented are asked to let us know when your group wants to be scheduled. We'll likely select new focus groups in May.

Groups are encouraged to meet in the Photo Lab (and remember to sign in). You can schedule your group's time in the lab on our website. Go into Calendar and book the room to avoid timing conflicts.

Photo Walk:
iPhones: Joyce talked a little about the Photo Walk in Downtown Summerlin at the Apple Store. Members who attended found it useful (and not too much hard-sell from the Apple folks). Joyce hopes to schedule this again next year, but in March rather than freezing February.

Equipment Purchases: Norm suggested that it was time to look into transforming the Photo Lab into a place where members could post-process photos by purchasing a computer and some processing programs. Motion made, seconded, and passed unanimously to look into pricing for such equipment.

Theme Competition (What Makes This A Winner?)
This month's theme was Winter. We've changed how "best picture" is selected because we've been getting so many good photos entered that the winner is often the photo with only 2 or 3 votes. This time, only 1 photo was accepted per person. The top 3 vote getters were voted on again. The winners (tie) were Dennis Filangeri and Helen Delahunt. A brief discussion followed regarding what made these "winners." Photos are displayed in the Photo Lab for the next month.

Next month's theme is Still Life.

Interest Groups: The various groups reported on progress. Members were reminded that no one is chained to a group; members can change groups if they wish. Members were encouraged to use the on-line Google Photo Albums to share photos. Go to Google Photos and into Shared Albums.

The interest groups formed up to discuss next steps. Groups are reminded that they'll likely do their presentations to the club starting at the April meeting.

OUR 2018 PHOTO SHOW A SUCCESS!

WE DID IT! 

Thanks to dedicated Photo Club volunteers, we put on one of our best-ever Photo Shows on November 17.

After Joel Lugavere talked with his friends in the Art Club, who agreed to loan us a large number of their easels, Judith Filangeri snagged all five meeting rooms at Desert Vista, which considerably enlarged the space for our show. This ultimately allowed the approximately 200 prints to be displayed in a gracious manner. No longer were they cramped next to — almost on top of — one another, or found sitting on the floor. This year the over 200 visitors had plenty of elbow room to walk around while viewing our photographic efforts. Chairs strategically placed throughout the room allowed for both conversations and a respite from standing. 

We began our preparations for the show sooner this year. On April 29, twelve Photo Club members met to form the Photo Show Committee which decided on tasks, divided up activities and organized sub-committees with specific responsibilities. Over the following months these groups worked on financing, the layout and display at the show, the photo contest, public relations and day-of-show scheduling. 

Kathy Kirby and her photo display sub-committee worked hard to raise the professional appearance of our show by standardizing mats, photo title tags and holders for the prints. Dennis Filangeri located new, functional hangers for all the mats, as well as handsome slip-on title tag holders. Meanwhile, Don LeHeup checked and repaired our older photo stands. 

As a result, we avoided some of the previous years’ last-minute scrambles and less-than-desirable display situations. 

Joel created an eye-catching poster to advertise the Photo Show as well as a handsome new flyer to promote our club’s activities. 

Meanwhile, with her usual project-manager efficiency, Judith held it all together by keeping everyone on track to produce results on schedule, while interfacing with CCOC (SCSAI clubs) management.  

When the show opened at 10 am on Saturday, Nov 17, we were ready. 

Diane Frankenfield - Lunar Eclipse

Many visitors commented on how difficult it was to choose “Just one ‘Best in Show’ photo.” When all the votes had been counted, Diane Frankenfield’s stunning “Lunar Eclipse - Calico Basin” was the clear winner. Across a dark sky arced the moon’s varying colors, in a series of time-paced shots which demonstrated both Diane’s photographic skill and her patience.

Don Lytton - Reflections

Two runners-up for “Best in Show” were not out-of-this-world, but both took viewers on a journey outside Vegas. Don Lytton’s “Sidewalk Reflections, Venice, Italy” and Dean Otteson’s “Delicate Arch, Utah” were vibrant and evocative.

One of our newer members, Cliff Rourke, provided a unique contribution. Cliff is a professional portrait photographer; he offered to bring his portable studio to the Photo Show. For a $15 donation to the club, Cliff provided portraits of interested attendees. This resulted in a nice boost to our treasury. We're delighted that Cliff has agreed to return next year.

When it was discovered there would be sufficient space for a TV screen with a rolling slide show, at the last minute Norm Wright put together a presentation watched by many visitors.

By himself, all day long, Adrian Cole adroitly handled sales of photos and photo-cards, netting the club extra revenue for our activities.

On the day of the big event, 22 club members — almost half our total current membership — volunteered to help do everything from set-up to tear-down to answering questions from visitors. 

Special Kudos to the most dedicated of our Photo Club members who spent all day (from shortly after 8:00 am to 4 pm) at the Photo Show:

Approximately half our members submitted photos for the show this year. 

If you did not, please give serious thought to doing so in 2019. Although the limit per photographer was 10 prints, it’s OK to submit only a few, if you wish — even one is fine. Other members would like to see your work, and you will learn from the process of participation. 

If you did not volunteer for the Photo Show in 2018, think about what you might do in 2019. There are many fun ways to put your talents to good use while you enjoy working with your fellow Photo Club members on a worthwhile project. You can help with advance preparations for the show, even if you will be out of town on the day of the event.

The 2019 Photo Show is scheduled to take place on Saturday, November 16th.

We have already reserved all five meeting rooms at Desert Vista, and are looking forward to another fun Photo Show.

Looking Forward to 2019

As we close out 2018 and are about to enter into 2019 I must reflect on the new directions that the photo club has taken during the past year. Briefly we are maintaining many of the traditions that the photo club historically has had, but we are also venturing out into new areas including cell phone photography, computer photo manipulation, and we have plans to expand into even more areas.

Some prospective members did not join in 2018 because they felt the club did not “teach” them a particular area of photography that they were interested in. Yes, one of the photo club’s missions is to have members learn how to take a better picture, but the club is not the “teacher” and the members the students. Rather the club is here to provide a forum for members to share their knowledge and photos and learn techniques they can use to improve their photos from other members.

If anyone wants to learn a simple skill to improve your photographic ability, Dennis set up the Photo Club’s web site that – among other things - has a series of instructional videos on lighting, the rule of threes, time and motion exposure, night photography, portrait and other tutorials to improve your photos. These informative basics, along with club news, trips and photos we have taken and other events are found at http://www.photography-scslv.club/p/about-club.html .

But a good photo is more than knowing the basic rules for taking a photo. It is a blend between the photographer’s ability to manipulate the basics such as focus and depth of field and the photographer’s skill to control these and other elusive elements to create a dynamic and interesting photo. Some may think they have a better way to learn how to do this but from my experience the only way you will improve your photos is to learn the basics, take photos using those elementary fundamentals, and then criticize your photos to improve the next photo that you take.

As we close out 2018 we have three more club events – our November 9^th meeting when elections for 2019 club officers will be held along with making final plans for our November 17^th photo show. All members of the current board have worked hard and in some cases we have had some very interesting conversations regarding the direction that the club will take in 2019. But we recognize that we cannot meet everyone’s individual needs and that is where you – the club member – come in. If you want to focus on a particular area of photography find other members who share your interest, get together and create a sub-group and experiment with controlling and modifying the photo composition, lighting and focal basics.

Our last meeting in 2018 will be our Holiday Party on December 13^th when there will be an opportunity for all members to get together, get to know each other better, to reminisce about the past, and make plans for the club’s future directions in 2019.

This month's theme was Wildlife. Members were asked to limit submissions to no more than two photos to make the competition more meaningful. The winner was Dale K.

Next month's Theme is Motion/Action.

Photo Show Information

• Photos for Display: All members are reminded that photos must conform to the format provided to everyone. Label info needs to be sent to Dennis either on line or as an email. We will finalize labels at the November meeting. Members were reminded that no photos will be accepted day of show. 
• Photo Show flyers have been distributed to all our community centers. 
• Volunteers: J thanked all who signed up to help day of the show. She will send a reminder to everyone about a week before the show. 
• Portraits: Cliff will be setting up an area in Room 3 to do portraits, donations to go to the club. All work will be digital. Visitors who want a portrait and don't have email will be asked to find a relative or neighbor who's email they can use. 
• Digital Photos: Norm offered to bring in a tv screen and asked members to provide digital photos to him by October 31st to work up into a presentation that will run on the screen.

The 2018 Silver State Scavenger Hunt took dedicated adventurers tens of thousands of miles collectively around the state, exploring some of Nevada's most astonishing railroad-related destinations. Participants searched near and far to complete the hunt, collecting memories and crossing off places of the state they've never visited before.

Techniques and Tips

• Joel L. gave a presentation on Photojournalism featuring photos from his long career in the field. When there was no disaster to photograph, nothing newsworthy, photojournalists were sent out to take "wild art" shots and some of these were very impressive. 
• Norm also gave a presentation on converting color to B&W and the importance of perspective in framing your shots. 

Theme Competition:

• This month's theme was Black and White. Members were asked to limit submissions to no more than two photos to make the competition more meaningful. 
• The winner was Norm W. His photo entitled Tank & Tanker was taken in Nelson, NV in June 2018 using Fuji Fine Pix and post processed using Photoshop. 
• Next month's Theme is Cityscapes.

Cityscapes – Appreciating Benefits of the Photography Club

Did you ever say, “That guy must have too much time on his hands”?  As I adjust to “retirement,” I’m finding I do have more time on my hands to devote to travel and hobbies. One of my lifetime hobbies has always been photography.

As I was working on some ideas for the August club photo theme, I realized that there is a great benefit to participating in the Photography Club. The Photography club has different monthly themes to feature photographic techniques and composition that would be of interest to our members. But there’s a hidden benefit to this as well.

While working on the theme: Cityscapes, I first wanted some insight as to what is meant by “cityscape.” So, I looked it up on Wikipedia. Simple, it’s an urban landscape. OK, but what is urban?

Does urban only mean large metropolitan areas such as Los Angeles and New York City? What about small urban areas such as Las Vegas or Ely?

Does urban have to be a thriving populated area or could it include lesser populated places such as Goodsprings or Rhyolite?

I started searching through my albums to get some insight as to what would be a good cityscape for the upcoming monthly theme. Then it hit me. What a fantastic benefit of being in a photography club!

Looking through my albums for just the right picture, I found myself reminiscing and reliving the experiences we shared over the years at the places and during the events where the photos were taken.  But then isn’t that the purpose of taking pictures and saving them in albums?

Sun City Photography Club Minutes, General Meeting, June 14, 2018, Desert Vista

Norm opened the meeting opened at 7 pm and led the pledge. We welcomed one guest, Gerard Klein.

Members present:  15 members present.  J reported that she's been tracking actual percentage of attendance. [NB: 62% for 2018, as compared to 43% in 2017, and 35% in 2016.]

Membership to date: 40

Treasurer's Report: Dennis reported a Financial Balance of $323.52.

Refreshments Committee: J. brought refreshments for tonight's meeting.

Field Trips

·         May: Floyd Lamb Park, Dale had a short presentation of photos from that trip.

·         June: June 19^th - High Roller at sunset. A signup sheet was provided.

·         July & August no field trips scheduled

Meeting Agenda & Discussion:

Photo Show Planning Report: The Photo Show Committee met with the board earlier in the evening. Members will get information on acceptable photo sizes, matting, number of photos that can be submitted, and deadlines by the August club meeting and via email to all members.

Theme Competition

This month's theme was Travel. We've been getting so many photos that it was getting hard to get a clear winner, so members were asked to limit submissions to no more than two photos, which everyone did.  The winner was Dennis Filangeri. His photo was taken in Venice, Italy, with a Cannon SX50. Photoshop was used for post-photo processing. 

Next month's Theme is Black and White.

Techniques and Tips

·         Tech Time: Dennis gave a hands-on demonstration of matting technique.

·         Tips: 9 Quick Tips for Better Black & White Photos, by Jamie Windsor. The video is available on our website (under TUTORIALS).
