Our last club meeting of 2023 is our official Club Business Meeting. It’s a busy agenda and it needs member input, so check it out below.

Everything You Need to Know for the Photo Show (Almost)

Mark your calendar
Date: Saturday, October 14, 2023, from 10 am to 3 pm
Place: Desert Vista

All members are encouraged to submit photos. Here are the details.

For Regular Matted Photos

• Photo sizes:
• 8x10 matted 11 x 14
• 11 x 14 matted 16 x 20
• Photos must be matted only; no frames
• Please submit photos that have not previously been displayed in our Photo Show
• Any matte color will be acceptable
• No more than 10 photos per person
• Photographer’s name must appear on the back of the photo.

For Specialty Photos

• Anything else you might do with photos, e.g. panorama, photos on canvas or metal, photo albums, mugs, etc.

Matted Photos-Labels and Deadlines

• Labels: Each matted photo must have a title. Please submit a title for each photo (not your name, which is on the back of the photo). Send a list of the titles to Maria Riach via email: mariamriach@gmail.com. She will make labels.
• Deadline for Title List: September 16th
• Deadline for Photos: October 12th Photo Club Meeting
• No photos will be accepted the day of the show. And NO handwritten labels will be accepted (so tacky), so get the list and photos in on time.

Specialty Photos-Labels and Deadlines

• Specialty photos can be submitted the morning of the show.
• Labels for Specialty Photos: We’re still working this out. More info by September.

Videos/Slide Shows

• Members willing to create a video or slide show will need to bring their own equipment for their display. Again, only material not already seen at our Photo Shows. Electrical outlets will be available.
• If you think you might create such a presentation, let us know anytime between now and September via email (snapscslv1@gmail.com)

Volunteers for Day of Show

As always, we'll need help setting up, tearing down, and running the show.  We'll send out a call for volunteers probably in September.

Travel Photography

Travel season is upon us, especially since it’s a good time to take a break from the heat of a Las Vegas summer.

At this month’s meeting, Laszlo Heredy will be giving us some pointers on how to take better travel photographs.

Also, Photo Club itself will be taking July and August off, no meetings. We’ll be back in September, when the program will be how to get your great photos ready for the October Photo Show.

Improving Your Photos

Following a few simple tips can improve your photography whether you use a cell-phone camera, point & shoot, or professional camera with all the bells and whistles.

What makes a good photograph compared to a snap-shot is all in how you compose your picture. You are your best judge of what a good photo is for you, try some of these techniques to see if they improve your opinion of your photos.

 April Meeting: "The Story Behind the Picture"

Club members are asked to submit one or two pictures and be prepared to tell the story behind the photo. It need not necessarily be one you took but could be one from your family archives, say of Uncle Eustis trying to milk a goat or your mother receiving an award. Or it could be how you were able to get a particular photo of a person, wildlife or special place. Pictures should be submitted digitally so they can be projected at the meeting.

3-D Photography with Larry Kaufman

Amazing 3D Imagery

Presented by Larry Kaufman

How would you like to be scared out of your wits at age 8, sitting in a truer-than-life 3D movie?

That's what happened to Larry Kaufman in 1953 when his mom took him to see "The House of Wax" with a Viewmaster. Although it was a horrifying intro to 3D for a young boy, it must have made a deep impression on him.

Several years ago, while reading about the Civil War, Larry discovered that at least 70% of all the pictures taken during the Civil War in the 1860s were taken in 3D. Ten years ago many TVs included a 3D component, due to the popularity of the 3D movie "Avatar." Larry purchased one of those TVs. Later he bought a used Fuji 3D digital camera on Ebay (he has a collection of antique cameras). 

Larry's presentation for the Photography Club will give a brief history of 3D as well as examples of pictures in the various methods of presenting 3D. He will then demo how to take 3D on any camera you have as well as on your smart phone. Additionally, he will bring books, cameras and viewers for a "show and tell" segment.

Who would have expected the old scary "House of Wax" movie to lead to this bonus for our club?

PHOTO CLUB MEETING PLANNING

I look forward to a brainstorming meeting at Tavern at the Falls to come up with activities and meeting topics. I think an informal gathering over tea and crumpets or whatever could be productive. With advance notice our members will have time to mull ideas over and come to the gathering armed with thoughts. Because many are being cautious about gatherings because of Covid. When it looks like things have settled down a date for the meeting will be selected. In the meantime, put on your thinking caps.

Here are some of my thoughts,

Do we need to have a “How To—“ presentation at every meeting? What about a “Show and Tell” Where one could give a presentation on a photographic experience they have had. I’m thinking of such things as Helen and Diane’s foray into Northern Nevada or J. and Dennis’ trip to the Ely Winterfest. Not to put them on the spot, but that type of thing.

Could we have a meeting of “Picture with a story”? The picture needn’t tell the story but what was your quest to get that particular picture. You needn’t have taken the picture, but it could be one from the family archives of how you fled across the Arctic Tundra ahead of a herd of bloodthirsty mosquitos or Uncle Smedley’s one day of sobriety. Something from the family lore, wedding, bar mitzvah, you name it. Is there a story behind the picture?

We have surveys of topics of possible interest. We should follow up on items that received several votes, but I think consideration should be given to things that might have received only one or two votes. A presentation on such could open one’s eyes to something else to try. One thing that will be addressed is Larry’s upcoming presentation on 3D photography. We stand to learn a bit about it and how we might give it a try. Another topic might be videos. Our cameras and Smart phones have video capabilities, but how do we go about using it? I’m sure one doesn’t just go out and start shooting. A talk on making a short 2-minute video might give one the courage for making a video without feeling it has to be a huge movie production. KISS usually works.

Newspaper Photography with Joel Lugavere 

Do not miss Joel Lugavere’s presentation on Newspaper Photography at our February meeting. 

Joel will cover his life as a newspaper photographer plus some tricks of the trade such as safety, relationship with police and fire, crossing yellow tape, covering sports, staying safe in riots, shoot outs and natural disasters. 

He had 32 wonderful years with the LA Times covering just about everything: travelling to the top of Mt. Rushmore with the daughter of one of the original stone carvers, exploring Canyon de Chelly with Native Americans, photographing dignitaries and those who thought they were. 

Joel was part of three Pulitzer teams and serving on the Board of Directors of the Press Photographers of Greater Los Angeles. Be prepared for a fascinating presentation.

Program Title:  Composition

Speaker: Marc Wiseman - Photo Club member

Program Description:

I would like to share my ongoing journey on improving the composition of photographs. I will talk about my approach to framing the photo subjects and the techniques I am working on to make the subjects pop out from the backgrounds.   This includes using shallow depth of field, selecting backgrounds of single color (sky, water), and more advanced shooting with low-key and high-key backgrounds.  I will also show some post-processing examples to make the photos more artsy. I will draw on examples from my underwater animal photography as well as my shots on land.

More about Marc:

I have been actively working on my photography for the last 10 years.  I have primarily been an underwater photographer shooting sharks, rays and the myriad of unusual critters that live in the sea.   More recently I have been developing my land photography skills with trips to Africa, Italy, Australia and other exciting places.

Guest Speaker:  Allan Duff

Program Description:

Have you ever wanted to receive constructive comments/suggestions to improve your photographs?    Here is your chance to benefit from the comments of an accomplished local photographer, Allan Duff. Allan, who is a member of the Nevada Camera Club, has served as one of their photo judges for the monthly competitions for several years.  He has graciously offered his expertise to us in prior years, and we are delighted that he has agreed to provide this program for us again.

For those of you new to the Club, please do not be hesitant about submitting your photo(s) for comments/suggestions.  Members have been appreciative of Allan's program in the past, and this session will be just as helpful!  We think you will find this to be not only helpful and informative as we all strive to improve our photography skills, but also FUN!

Members are invited to submit 1-2 photos for Allan's comments. 

To participate, simply email your photo(s) to Diane Frankenfield (dfranken2@gmail.com) as JPEG file attachments to your message. Please name your file with the following format:

Example:  Frankenfield_001, Frankenfield_002

where _001 indicates that photo will be shown in "Round 1", and _002 indicates that photo will be shown in "Round 2" if there is time...depending on the number of photos members submit.

If you plan to attend in person on October 14 and would like to display your photo(s) in the room, feel free to bring it/them.  However, all photos to be critiqued must be submitted via email to Diane as we will be creating one electronic file for Allan to use for the evening.

More About James:

Self-taught in photography, I've always had a fascination with the power of the still image.  Using mostly the Kodak Instamatic cameras as a young photographer, I started using Canon cameras in 1983 and have been using them ever since.  Today I use a Canon 5D Mark IV for my landscape and nature work.  For my wildlife, I shoot with a Canon 7D.  My passion is the natural world and trying to capture the beauty in my landscape and wildlife photography. Program Title: Photographing People Around the World

Speaker: Club Member Norman Wright

Program Description: Prior club meetings have been about how to photograph landscapes and still lifes.  Photographing people is more challenging.  People constantly move, change expression, and are dynamic.  Norman's presentation will show people he, and his wife Barbara, photographed while traveling the world and it will give tips on how to improve the photos of anyone you photograph, (even your grandchildren). 

More About Norman:

Norman Wright began photographing when he was 5 years old helping his father develop photos in a makeshift darkroom and his interest in photography was born.  In 1969 he photographed his first wedding for a friend.  Norm was more interested in landscape photography and he initially said "I am never going to become a wedding photographer", but weddings was a way of making money while developing the skills to sell scenic photos.

Never say never because over the next four decades he photographed 1,500 weddings, initially working in a wedding photo mill studio in New York City, before he graduated to photograph for Gerard Photography, a high-class studio located in New Jersey. Norman has photographed in St. Patrick's Cathedral, on top of the Empire State Building and in "Windows on the World" - located on the 107th floor of the World Trade Center before 9/11/2001. Norman has photographed weddings from the average Joe and Jane who you meet every day to the rich and famous, the most recognizable being Howie Long, the football player, actor, sports announcer.

Program Title: Getting on the Basics Bandwagon

Speaker: Club Member M.E. Chidiac

Program Description:  M.E. will be presenting different tips and tricks for cleaning, changing and protecting cameras and lenses, preventing camera shake, holding a camera correctly, tripods, and more!

More about M.E.:

M.E. Chidiac is a corporate executive turned freelance African wildlife photographer. Growing up in the Florida Keys, M.E.'s love of nature would eventually get her out of the concrete office world and back into more natural surroundings.  She has lived around the world, including Paris, living in the city many years before moving first to Kuwait and then to Dubai. M.E., a former safari junkie, became a freelance wildlife photographer and guide, and holds numerous certifications in wildlife-related subjects. Although M.E. .now lives in Las Vegas, she considers her "office" to be the wilderness.

For well over two decades, M.E. has photographed wildlife in their natural environments.  A skilled observer in her ongoing study of their behaviors with a keen interest in ornithology, she uses this knowledge to refine her photography and to teach others.  She lectures on wildlife, Africa, and wildlife photography, as well as training new wildlife guides.  When she is not in the bush, M.E. is busy putting pen to paper.  She has written several books highlighting wildlife, safaris, African cooking, and more.

Program Title: Photographing Food Using Natural Light

Guest Speaker: Larry Hanna

Program Description:

The Program topic is photographing food using natural light. I will show how easy it is to photograph award winning photographs with the simplest tools. I will demonstrate how I relate background, sets and use of props. All the images I will show were shot in my kitchen nook using window light, my favorite light. I will demonstrate how I use simple homemade light modifiers to shape the light.

Guest Speaker Bio:

Larry Hanna opened an all-purpose studio in Las Vegas in 1976.  He quickly found his niche in resort photography.  In the last few years, he has concentrated his work on food and architectural photography.  He has received the coveted Master of Photography and Craftsman Photographer degrees from the Professional Photographers of America.  Larry served twice as the President of the Professional Photographers of Nevada and also President of the Las Vegas Chapter of the Advertising Photographers of America where he also served as a National officer.  The last 3 years he has finished in the top 10 in an International Food Photography competition with over 2,000 photographers competing from around the world.  The past 5 years he been working on a personal project of traveling the backroads of Nevada photographing old mining camps and ghost towns.

Program Title: The Vast, Diverse Nevada Outback

Guest Speaker:  Russ Colletta

Program Description:

I love how photography constantly provides the motivation to get out and explore and experience new places, as well as the opportunity to expand our photographic vision and skills.  A couple of years ago I began exploring abandoned places in some of the most remote locations in our state.  I'll talk about what to expect and how to prepare for this type of photography, as well as the kind of images you can expect to capture. The level of adventure can vary from tame to pretty exhilarating.

Guest Speaker Bio:

Many, many years ago I was approaching completion of my undergraduate college degree at UNLV, but needed three additional credits in the humanities to fulfill the requirements.  While searching for classes to take, a friend noticed a photography class that would fulfill the requirement, so I enrolled in the course.  It was a classic case of "the rest is history" because I have been "hooked" on photography ever since.   Since that time, I have taken additional courses, completed study on my own, and attended workshops conducted by Galen Rowell, Art Wolf, Justin Black and others.  I have won awards in juried shows in Nevada and Colorado and have had images published in local and regional publications.  I also taught photography for a number of years as an adjunct instructor at the Yerington Campus of Western Nevada College.  I have lived in northern and Southern Nevada, as well as Colorado, and love exploring the diverse, richly scenic wonders of the natural world.  But I still haven't made that one, perfect image.  That quest will likely never end.
